MY GEARS & EQUIPMENT

Whenever on an expedition, trekking, hiking or any outdoor adventure trips ... I always have someone asking ..... " What gears are you carrying and recommended equipment ? "

MY PERSONAL SURVIVAL PRINCIPALS

Basically, Prepare, Then Just Keep Your ‘Cool’

Thousands of people are lost or injured in the outdoors each year. The common attitude of those we have rescued is of both surprise and embarrassment that this could happen to them. Most expressed the fear they felt and their frustration for not being better prepared.

I have observed and learned many things over the past 15 years. I have witnessed the common mistakes that people make when found in a wilderness crisis. It is a subject that has been written about before but is worthy of repeating.

There are five basic survival principles that, when practiced, will allow an individual to stay alive long enough to be found by search and rescue — a benchmark number of hours is 72.

The first principle is one of the most obvious: PREPARATION. Being prepared physical and mentally is again an obvious advantage in a survival situation.

The second principle is FEAR MANAGEMENT. Fear is the leading cause of fatal choices that lead to death by exposure.

The third is HYDRATION, and the fourth is body-core management; vital body functions fail if both are allowed to get out of control.

The last principle is one that is not normally talked about in a survival situation: HOW TO BE FOUND

All of these principles, if practiced, will save your life if you find yourself in a wilderness crisis. And, all will be written about in more detail in future issues.

PROTECTION
Whether out in the wilderness or in an urban area, you must first assess your surroundings and protect yourself and others from harm both physically and from any negative emotions.

LOCATION
Consider where you are and think about whether you are safer and more likely to be helped or found by staying there or by moving somewhere else.  Usually it is best to stay put and use what is there to survive especially if others know your plans and route.

WATER
Even if you have a supply of water with you, look for other sources nearby and use those first, saving any pouches/bottles as a last resort.  Save any water used for cooking to drink and/or for washing. If someone is dehydrated, they need to sip small amounts of water a little at a time.  If it is hot, find or create shade and don’t exert yourself. Conserve your body’s moisture by talking only when necessary and breathing through your nose. Liquids such as urine and saltwater should never be ingested but can be distilled if needed. If faced with having to drink water from a questionable source with no way to purify it, you may have to take a chance on it even if it makes you sick. If it is your last resort, risking illness is better than certain death.

FOOD
Assess what you have and what you could get from your surroundings. Adjust what you eat and how much based upon your situation.  Digesting food, especially proteins and fats, uses up water so make sure you don’t jeopardize staying hydrated by eating more than you should. At home you should have a stash of emergency food in a cool dry place. When travelling, you need to carry what won’t spoil and/or does not weigh too much and if you run out or lose your stash, knowing how to procure food is your only option.

DAY PACK => Mountain Smith Day TLS (EDC = Everyday Carry)

With Mountain Smith Day TLS, Delivering excellent on and off trail performance, the classic Mountain Smith Day TLS lumbar pack has 1.35 litres / 854 cubic inches of storage capacity and excellent organizational features. The Day TLS utilizes an innovative, durable fabric made entirely of re-purposed plastic beverage bottles.

The waist belt of the Day TLS has a wide wrap-around style and incorporates the triangulated straps of Mountain Smith's patented Delta Compression System to shift weight into the lumbar region for a stable, evenly distributed load. Lined with an elastic mesh fabric, the foam-padded waist belt provides more support than comparable lumbar packs and remains comfortable to wear even on hot days.

Larger than traditional lumbar packs, the Day TLS has a full 1.35 litres / 854 cubic inches of carrying capacity but still weighs well under 0.9kg / 2 pounds.. Unlike full-blown day packs, the Day TLS is compact enough that your movements remain uninhibited.

Featuring three separate compartments and two additional storage pockets, the Day TLS offers organizational options. A zippered pocket on the inside of the main compartment provides a hideaway for keys, coins and other valuables. Adjustable mesh side pockets feature an elastic closure and can accommodate 0.94 litres / 32 ounce water bottles. A bungee attachment on the front of the Day TLS allows you to carry a jacket, sweatshirt or additional gear.

With varied carrying options, the versatile Day TLS can also be used as a shoulder bag, a briefcase or as an add-on pocket for a full-size backpack. Optional Mountainsmith Strapettes (sold separately) can be deployed to serve as shoulder straps and provide extra support when heavy loads are being carried in the Day TLS. A rain cover (sold separately) is available to protect the pack in inclement weather.

Geigerrig Hydration Pack 3litres

GEIGERRIG Hydration Engines, often referred to as "reservoirs" or "bladders", are compatible with most other packs.   Spray to cool, clean, share, and drink.  Ready for GEIGERRIG plug-n-play, on-the-go, in-line filtration. Reversible and dishwasher safe (top shelf).

Weight:  .55 lbs or .24 kg (2L)  .60 lbs or .26 (3L)
Length:  12" (2L)     16" (3L)
Width:     7"  (2L)       7"  (2L)

1. Slide Top and Wide Mouth Bladder Opening: The slide top allows the entire top of the engine to open up to provide easy access for cleaning, drying and filling. - This slide top is a key product component that comes from our healthy relationship with the company Hydrapak.

2. Pressure Bulb: The pressure bulb and pressure tube provides the mechanism to pressurize our hydration engines utilizing the patented two chamber system. Spray to drink, Spray to Cool, Spray to Clean, Spray to Share…etc. It is certainly convenient to have this capability so that you can enjoy these benefits from the hydration pack on your back.

3. Surge Protector Valve: The bite valve has an on-off switch as well as a special configuration that makes it uniquely suitable for pressurized, spray hydration without leakage. - This Surge Protector valve is a great product benefit that comes from our healthy relationship with the company Hydrapak.

4. Quick Release Valves:  Unthreading the pressure tube and drinking tube from your hydration pack every time you want to refill or clean your hydration engine is inconvenient. The quick release valves allow you to easily disconnect the tubes and leave them positioned in the hydration pack while you remove the reservoir for filling and cleaning.

5. #15 Denier Polyurethane: This is a tougher polyurethane that minimizes any ballooning affect that may occur when the reservoir is pressurized for spraying. GEIGERRIG Pressurized Hydration Packs have a top quality Hydration Engine.

6. Compression Backing Nylon: This nylon backing helps protect the engine as well as prevent any ballooning effect on the air side. Our hydration packs contain nylon sleeves that host the hydration engine, and the nylon backing on our hydration engines help slip the bladder into and out of your GEIGERRIG while also providing additional protection from items that you may have packed for the journey.

7. BPA Free, PHTHALATE Free, PVC Free, TRICLOSAN Free
